Web 2.0 on Carte Blanche
Last night Carte Blanche had an insert on web 2.0 featuring Rafiq and Dave.
As I commented on Nic’s blog this morning, I was not overly impressed. In my opinion the content wasn’t well structured and I have a feeling that 80% of viewers still have no idea what web 2.0 is or how it can impact their lives and work. They assumed a certain level of understanding which is waaaay off the mark. The reality is that most of the business professionals in SA have an ‘intimacy’ with the web which is more like this.
We need to start explaining what some may feel is the obvious, if we want marketing, advertising and business leaders to really understand how web 2.0 can add to their brand campaigns then we need to make the information more accessible. Here’s a basic example - I’m a university graduate with 10 years of working experience - my friends have the same level of education and experience and have successful careers where they are key decision makers at high levels for some of SA’s most loved brands….do any of them use RSS readers to aggregate and process their information? No. Do any of them actively use web 2.0 concepts in their marketing campaigns? Perhaps, but not to the extent they could.
I guess this explains why I’m passionate about making this ’stuff’ easier to understand and why I’m slightly irritated that Carte Blanche had an opportunity to do just that, yet they didn’t.

Melissa,
Firstly, this is not the first (and probably won’t be the last) time that Carte Blanche has mis- or under-reported a story. However, this has just provided you with a wide-open stage to inform us South Africans on how Web 2.0 is going to impact our lives!
!
Melissa, totally with you on the ‘making it easier to understand’!
I come from a corporate environment where all of this is highly under-appreciated, and in the end, it just results in missed opportunities. Like the Carte Blanche bit, apparently…
So, good luck in trying to simplify the web. After all, simplicity is a beautiful thing.
hey Melissa. couldn’t agree more that probably 80% still don’t understand what Web 2.0 REALLY is. Dave & Rafiq did really well in trying to get the message across but perhaps Carte Blanche don’t fully understand what Web 2.0 is themselves, in which case portraying their view of it didn’t help much!
@ Lauren - thanks, agree - will do my best
@ Darren - yes indeed less is more!
@ Michelle - I agree 100% I think it’s a topic that required more prep and research.

Hey Melissa, you raise good points here. Although having worked with the producers, I can tell you that giving a clear understanding of the subject wasn’t top of the priority list.
I’m going to do a follow-up blog post on it just now, and will ping this article so you can check it out.

[...] A damn lot was said this week about the Web2.0 insert of Sunday. Some people were upset that the message was a misrepresentation of what exactly Web2.0 was. In all honesty, I liked it. It was confusing in a way, but it was great seeing my friends on such a big program on telly. Dave & Rafiq, you guys rocked! I think I agree most with what Grant said. [...]
