South Africa’s first Social Media Press Release has been launched

South Africa’s first Social Media Press Release (SMPR) has been launched as part of the innovative Standard Bank Pro20 series social media campaign.

Journalists, bloggers and opinion piece writers are exposed to so much more information than ever before – the SMPR collects and packages the information neatly and coherently to streamline the process of story creation. Think of the SMPR as a press release on steroids, it is designed to make information accessibility and retrieval smarter and easier.

A standalone web page, the SMPR contains links to visual material, multimedia content, pre-approved quotations from brand representatives, logos, brand specific social media sites and other relevant industry news sources and stories. The process is intended to streamline story research and development and I for one believe that the SMPR is set to change the way that brands and journalists exchange information.

Standard Bank has taken a bold step (not the only one however, take a look at the SMPR and you’ll see that they’ve utilised some very cool social media tools as part of the Pro20 series campaign.)

Thanks to Angus and Mike for involving me in this historic online first and to Carl and Lisa for the hard work and constant fine-tuning.

Take a look and give me your opinion, I think it rocks, it’s definitely ‘Got the Kaboom!’

  2. [...] I can’t help but wonder though, why did they call it a social media press release? The words “press release” really refer to the traditional way of gaining publicity through the printed press; whereas the words “media release” or “news release” are more inclusive and relevant for broadcast and online media. Perhaps “social media news release” or just simply “social media release” would work. But the terminology is a minor point, overall I feel that this is fantastic work by Standard Bank and all those who worked on this concept, including Cerebra, Brandsh and Melissa Attree. [...]

  3. Congratulations Melissa, this is a great campaign! You must be very excited about it. :)

I hope this inspires many other PR companies to turn their ideas into reality.

  4. Thanks Robynn, it’s a start - let’s hope there are more brands out there willing to do things differently!
    Thanks again :)
