Thanks Leon - well they are Jason's points but issues I agree with 100%. I'm all for ORM and 'listening' also as a key social media tool.

Melissa,
You made some great points. Including this:

“Social media becomes a valuable feedback loop or research base for some brands, and for others it’s insignificant. Yeah I said it - social media can be insignificant for many brands.”

Not all brands get a large amount of discussion online. For the ones that do the feedback and insight can be highly valuable.

Monitoring what is being said is the first step brands/companies need to get into. Once they understand what is being said they can look at participating.

@Paul - indeed :)

@Henre Agreed dude - that's why I'm more excited about the wider applications in terms of content syndication and yes as you say most people are not even aware RSS is being used to do certain things :)

Howdydoody Melissa, thanks for this post. The guys at Common Craft sure knows how to explain stuff.

However, I don't see RSS catching on to mainstream internet users.

Where I see the value in RSS is how we use it on websites, blogs and news sites to distribute information. Most of the time, the user has no idea he's working with RSS, just happy about the value that's added through syndicated content.
